Then here is the first of eight steps you must take in my new program called Living Forward in Life. Learn to laugh sooner; laugh about your mistakes in life. Learn from your mistakes. When you can say to your friends ―Do you remember when… and everybody laughs and it‘s okay, then you are able to move forward. The key is to not wait for months or years or even a lifetime before you arrive at that point. Move the laughter forward and your life will move forward in a very positive way. Just let it go and set yourself free to experience the true abundance that was meant for you. That is my goal: to help you build a better you, one day at a time.

Steps for Moving Forward (1st Step)

Here are some steps that you must take if you want to move forward in a way that will last for a lifetime:

First step forward:
During each of my speaking events so far this year, I have seen many people who have lost hope because they have lost the ability to dream. The greatest gift in life is the ability to dream, but the ability to dream has truly become an idle factory with very dirty windows.

Dreaming alone is good, but to dream with others is great. Sometimes, you can go faster in life by yourself – “I’ll do it; I can do it faster.” But you will go further with others. I have had a lot of disappointments throughout my life, usually when I try to go at it alone. But I am much more successful when I have someone close to remind me of the Good Life Rule to be thankful for what you have and not yearn for impossibilities. When you have that ability to be thankful, you can accomplish so much more.

Again, I can hear you thinking that’s not right. My radio show each week is really helping me be able to hear what you are thinking out there. I’m talking about a different road and a lot of different ideas. I have personally seen what happens sometimes when it comes from the outside in. Sure I run across people all the time that are not satisfied with what they have and they keep getting more in life. Again, I’m talking about that peace in life that money can’t buy. It is your ability to grow from the inside, so when the outside gets better you can enjoy it more.

Come back tomorrow for the 2nd step. Until then have a great day.

Establish is a Powerful Word

I have always been intrigued by what I call “power” words. I’m referring to those powerfully descriptive words that set a person or thing apart from all the others. Some of the words that catch my attention are: influential, accomplished, eloquent, savvy, and astute. The word that I would like to focus on for this short article is “establish.” In my opinion, “establish” just rings out vision, success, and truth.

“Establish” rings out vision when it is used by such people as the founding leaders of our nation when they wrote the preamble of the United State of America. “We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Do you see vision in those words? I sure do. I see a great nation that “We the People” would gladly fight for. These great leaders penned words that burned a vision in the hearts of generations to come. You may have noticed that the word “establish” was used twice in these patriotic stirring sentences.

“Establish” rings out success. It is a transitive verb that is used to start or set up something that is intended to continue or be permanent, as in the preamble. Successful businesses often use the word “establish” in their advertising to brand their success. “Established in 1937” implies decades of satisfied customers because they have delivered valuable goods or services. “Establish” underwrites permanence and a solid history.

“Establish” rings out truth. Anything that is not founded in truth is very temporary. The great Book of truth, the Bible, states in Proverbs 12:19 “The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” The Bible also says the truth shall find you out. Truth is measured in actions as well as words. Therefore, “establish,” to me, implies a degree of integrity that is honored by trust. A person only operating in truth builds trust.

Early 19th century Irish novelist James Joyce wrote, “I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day.” What are you establishing personally and professionally? The details of your life determine your destiny. Are you living a life in such a way that the people attending your funeral will find with ease, positive power words that will describe what you have established?

I received an email today, and although I never read the email because I knew it was an advertisement for a product that I was not interested in, the catch line kept coming back to me. It read, “Three Things in Life That, Once Gone, Never Come Back: Time, Words, and Opportunity.” I started meditating and preaching to myself on those words. As I write this article, I think of Bryan Dodge’s teaching that we are all leaders at one level or another. And as a leader, we all must manage these three things well.

I still believe that time management is more of a mindset than a set of rules. If you are not using your time wisely, check your attitude and skills more often than your watch. Time- wasters creep into your life in the form of bad habits as a result of lackadaisical attitudes more often than poor planning. What are the time-wasters that you need to replace with more productive habits? Do you spend too much time on mindless activities because your skills are not up to speed? Once a minute is spent, it is gone forever. You cannot recover time especially the seconds, minutes, and hours that you waste. Manage your time as if it were your most precious asset because it is.

When was the last time you regretted saying something? The general advice here is to choose your words carefully. Try to be enthusiastic and edifying by focusing on the positive aspects of every situation. Once you say the wrong words, they are hard to take back. The other regret is when you should have spoken but you chose to remain silent. I insulted one of my business associates by failing to show my appreciation to him for giving me a referral some time back that generated some valuable business. He recently found out about it and was offended because I never so much as picked up the phone and thanked him for it. Remembering to say thank you and expressing appreciation are a very important part of using words.

One definition of opportunity is “a possibility created due to a favorable combination of circumstances.” Opportunity, whether it is for building a relationship, creating a fortune, or doing something special, is based on a person’s ability to recognize the situation when it is at hand. The word opportunity is not an “action word,” but for it to be of value to you, you must take action. The only synonym I could find for opportunity was “chance.” I found that interesting. Learn to recognize an opportunity when it presents itself so you don’t miss your chance. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. It is unlikely that those combinations of circumstances will appear again.

Are You Proactive or Reactive?

Why do so many people put off what they need to do today? You can find the answer in the way you choose to live your life, proactive or reactive. The Good Life Rules are all based on living a better life both at home and at work. Until you change to a proactive lifestyle from a reactive lifestyle, you will always blame procrastination. Don’t get me wrong; many people suffer from procrastination and it can steal the Good Life from you. So what are the keys that allow you to live a proactive life?

First key: Remove guilt. You were not born with a reactive mentality. You learned it over years of making mistakes, setting goals and not accomplishing them, or not setting goals at all. I once heard a person say “Guilty feelings are circular, but you need to move in a straight line with one foot in front of another.” Small steps can lead to giant gains and that is exactly what you can do to counteract all the guilt.

Second Key: Don’t get distracted. Never before has the human race had more distractions in their daily lives. It is important to realize that if the world keeps you distracted, you will not stop and think. And if you don’t think before making your choices, you will continue to make mistakes; you will continue that reactive mentality and continue to blame your failures on all the distractions in your life. Once you understand why thedistractions are in your life, controlling them gets easier. It is very important to create an environment that is more serene. You can escape to a tranquil mental setting by eliminating or minimizing noise and distractions, ensuring you have adequate lighting, and most importantly, living by one of my favorite sayings, “If you’re not in a hurry, don’t act like you are.”

Third key: Exercise. Those of you who feel fatigued and you just can’t get around to doing what you have to do, exercise! Ironically, when you are most tired and feel a lack of energy, exercise will provide a boost, raise your endorphins, and oxygenate the brain to think more clearly in your day to day choices. The key word is “think.” I know from personal experience—exercise promotes focused attention.

Fourth key: The Good Life has two major components: recognizing your gifts and taking action to bring them to fruition. As great as it feels to be able to see some of the important ideas that come into your head or heart for what they are—life-changing opportunities— that’s only one part of the puzzle. You’ve got to do something about them. And to me, a 48-hour time period is the perfect framework for taking action, because it gives you time to prepare yourself, but not enough time to procrastinate. So, always remember The Law of Diminishing Intent: what comes to your heart, you must act on it within 48-hours, or the world will distract you or steal it from you.

My wish every day is that I can find the words and energy to remind you that you are a “somebody,” not just an “anybody.” Somebodies are more proactive than reactive. Anybodies are more reactive than proactive. Somebodies understand that it is our choices that determine the course of our lives. To change our current course to a better life, you have to stop and think about your choices. To do so will change your philosophy, not your circumstances. Somebodies always take advantage of their circumstances created by their right choices.
